#ScarsAreBeautiful: Sonali Bendre proudly flaunts her 20-inch cancer scar

Sonali Bendre was diagnosed with Metastatic Cancer in 2018. She had then flown to New York the same year for Chemotherapy and treatment. Sonali recently did a photo shoot and interview with Vogue India, where she has beautifully embraced her 20-inch cancer scar.

The scar is visible on Sonali Bendre’s abdomen and no attempts are made to hide it. This photoshoot gives a strong message of #ScarsAreBeautiful. Bollywood and Fashion industry have often been stereotyped as being perfect. Today’s generation links beauty with having flawless skin and scarless body. However, this stereotype was shattered by Sonali Bendre’s Vogue India photoshoot.
#ScarsAreBeautiful: A newly discovered attitude towards life
We often see women obsessing about marks on their face and body. Pimple, acne, stretch marks and other ‘scars’ are considered ugly. We have to understand that these stereotypes were set by society and now the definition has to change. We have to start believing that these marks and scars don’t define our beauty. Our beauty is defined by our attitude towards life, our actions and the kind of person we are.
India’s Best Dramebaaz judge, Sonali is seen smiling through the photographs and flawlessly carries her hairstyle, as she had to shave her head for her treatment.
In this interview, Sonali Bendre said,
“My first thought was to hide it because it was a disease. I thought my ‘brand’ is overall along I had been endorsing healthy eating and health-focused products, and suddenly it was all gone. It was only when my oncologist said that I had fourth-stage cancer and a 30 percent chance that my whole world view changed. Suddenly I didn’t see any reason not to talk about it. I had done nothing wrong; it was not my fault I had cancer, so why was I hiding it?”
She also tells that she visited a Therapist to help her cope with her mental and emotional state during cancer.
Sonali found strength and support in her friends and family during this heartbreaking time. She was diagnosed with 4th stage cancer and was absolutely broken. But she found a way to cope with this through laughing. Sonali and her husband, Goldie Behl found a way to joke around cancer and also have terms like ‘AC (After Cancer)’ and ‘BC (Before Cancer)’.
To anyone out there who is suffering from any ailment, you might be alone in this fight. But it is your attitude towards life that defines you. Beauty is not about being perfect, being courageous is.
